I wait for the train in the subway station, and I’m accosted by a drunken homeless man who begins shouting profanities at the commuters. I avoid making eye contact and briskly walk away toward the tracks. I pull out my cell phone and pretend to be engrossed in its screen, determined to maintain the facade of distraction.
