Either way, I posit that intellect might emerge spontaneously in a sufficiently complex AI system. Evolution did not flip a switch inside the brains of proto-humans, and they suddenly became sapient. It was a gradual process, and it occurred because sapience and sentience provided an evolutionary advantage.
